Getting REIL with Mr. Tweedle

When it comes to all things REIL, there's one man who comes to mind: GCA's Mr. Tweedle. The Royals' Epic Intramurals League began as a group of Grade 5 students playing floor hockey, and has since exploded into a major program for students in Grades 4 to 6. One of the favourite aspects of the program are the custom designed jerseys for the 12 Elementary (8 Jr High) teams with inspired logos created by Mr. Tweedle himself.

Everyone has a favourite logo it seems, so Mr. Tweedle created REIL Logo Madness, a chance to vote on the different designs to determine which logo is the "REIL" champion. (If you haven't yet had the chance to vote, don't fret - just click the link and join in the fun.) In light of this new initiative, we reached out to Mr. Tweedle with a few questions that he was kind enough to answer.

Where did the design inspiration come from for the logos?

We spent a lot of time coming up with the names for each of our teams and when we had finalized each one, I spent tons of time researching the heart behind each name we selected. Apparently Mr. Dueck inspired the Lumberjacks logo because students tell me all the time that the Lumberjack looks exactly like Mr. Dueck, I guess I think about him a lot.

Which is your top pick of all the logos?

Asking me which logo is my favourite is like asking me which child is my favourite, I designed them all and love them all for different reasons. That being said, The original Warriors logo has always been a favourite of mine with the ALTERNATE Barrage logo and the Blizzard logo coming in a close second.

Have you thought about creating any new designs?

I am ALWAYS thinking about new logos! I'm just trying to find the time between being a husband, a dad, and a teacher.

Have you thought about redesigning any of the logos you have now?

My top priority is to make alternate logos for our newest teams (Blizzard, Blizzard, Miners, Trailblazers), but I also have a bunch of ideas floating in my head for some of the other teams we currently have.

Is there a chance that there will be any new sports introduced in next year's intramurals?

We are always open to trying new things and would love to see some new sports in the near future. Handball was a HUGE success this year in the brand new Grade 6 REIL program, and we were going to try a BRAND NEW version of dodgeball Term 3, but obviously didn't get a chance to try it out this year.

What is your favorite thing about the REIL intramurals program?

I love sports, they've been a huge part of my life and have absolutely helped me become a better person, on and off the court. My favourite part about the intramural program is watching EVERY student have the opportunity to be a part of a team regardless of skill level or having to try out. I want sports to be accessible to everyone and I truly believe that the intramural program encourages all students to be involved.

While the REIL program may be on hold at the moment, that doesn't mean we can't continue to be inspired by its mission. We're inviting our students to join in on the fun and submit a REIL logo of their own. You can use whatever medium you choose to design your logo, then send a picture of it to What happens with these logos? Stay tuned to find out more. Let's just say it's "REIL" exciting.
