(Greek for Ichthys, the “Jesus Fish”)

Throughout scripture, the picture of fish has deep significance. The Hebrew word for fish is “dag” and means to “increase”. It is the root for a multitude, as in a “multitude of nations”. In John: 21, Jesus performs a miracle and the disciples catch 153 fish. The number 153 is symbolic as it is connected to God’s name. So this miracle signified God “increasing” His kingdom by gathering all of His children “fish” from all over the nations. The disciples understood the symbolism in this miracle as part of their mandate to be “fishers of men”, teaching what Jesus taught. The ichthys is also in reference to the miracle of the loaves and fishes where Jesus multiplies five loaves and two fish to feed the multitude. The breakdown of the letters creates the acronym for the Greek spelling of “Jesus”.

Dating back to the late 2nd century (AD), the ichthys became a sacred symbol used by Christians to recognize churches and other believers in order to avoid persecution by the Roman Empire. It is this important Christian symbol that was the inspiration for our Donor Recognition Wall in our Legacy Hallway. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Glenmore Christian Academy, we are offering two special Donor Circles from now until the end of the 2020-21 school year. Proceeds from these circles will go towards financially “feeding the multitude” of families at our school who are in need of support. Thank you for helping us to fill the nets and spread the Gospel of Jesus.
