The safety and well-being of our students, staff and community at GCA is paramount. Over the 2020-21 school year, we had several precautions in place related to the guidelines set out by Alberta Health and Alberta Education.

Here are some of the measures in place:

Promotion of frequent and proper hand hygiene

  • Sanitizing is required when entering the building, entering classrooms, before eating, when leaving the building and whenever applicable with signage and sanitizing stations throughout the facility to encourage this practice.

  • Hand washing throughout the day will also be required.

Maintaining physical distancing

  • As much as possible, physical distancing between students will be maintained to minimize risk. Each grade has an assigned door in an effort to minimize physical interactions with other grades.

  • Stanchions (rope barriers) and arrows have been implemented in high traffic areas such as hallways to provide directional flow of traffic and safe distancing for staff and students.

  • Students remain in homeroom classes as much as possible, with teachers moving between classes (with some exceptions).

  • After school, we utilize the PikMyKid program which allows students to meet their parents safely outside the school building and minimizes the amount of people entering the building during the school day.

  • Typical large gatherings of students, such as assemblies or other multi-grade gatherings (i.e. chapels) will not occur, if physical distancing of two meters between each student cannot be maintained.

  • Limited numbers of students are allowed in the washrooms at any time.

  • In each classroom, desks are no longer set-up in clusters and are spread out as much as possible, with assigned seating.

  • Where table configurations require students to face one another such as Kindergarten (and any other "table" areas), barriers (similar to plexiglass) have been placed between students facing one another and beside one another.

  • As per Alberta Health's guidelines, students in Grades 4 to 9 must wear a mask at school, including classrooms, hallways, common areas and whenever physical distancing of two metres cannot be maintained. These students will also wear masks when travelling on school buses (when applicable). Teachers and staff also wear masks in the same circumstances as above (exemptions are made for students and staff who are unable to wear a mask due to medical circumstances).

  • A cohort is defined as a group of students and staff who remain together.  Contact tracing is also more feasible when groups (cohorts) are maintained. GCA’s students are cohorted by classroom whenever feasible, and by grade during shared activities (i.e. recess, lunch, Physical Education, Junior High Options, etc).

  • As much as possible, the cohorts will stay in the same space, with physical distancing.

Increased Cleaning/Sanitizing

  • Increased frequency of cleaning and disinfection of high-touch areas and equipment (e.g. door knobs, water fountains, counters) inside and outside classrooms.

  • All washrooms and high-touch areas are cleaned four times during the school day.

  • Each night, the entire school is disinfected with a negatively charged ion spray which adheres to any surface and effectively eliminates any germs or viruses.

  • Additional custodial staff have been hired to accommodate the increased cleaning of the facility

  • Cleaning logs will be kept and maintained to ensure the completion of all cleaning and disinfecting protocols.

  • Any activity involving shared items or equipment will be avoided where possible. If equipment must be shared (such as computers or iPads), then all shared items must be cleaned and disinfected after each use.

We are continuing to evaluate as the situation progresses, and will also continue to follow the safety guidelines provided by Alberta Health Services.
